今年も、クリスマスがすぐそこにやってきました。
街を流れるメロディーのうちの多くは讃美歌が占めており、
「ひいらぎかざろう」も讃美歌集の第二編129番に収められています。
が、ひいらぎがクリスマスの飾りであるということがキリスト教を感じさせますが、
2003年のクリスマス更新でアップした「We wish you a merry Christmas!」と同様に
イエスキリストの誕生を祝う宗教曲と言うよりは、「クリスマスと新年をお祝いする季節の歌」に思えます。

この歌詞は一例で、いくつかのヴァリエーションがあり、
元となっているのは1862年に出版された楽譜で、これはウェールズの詩人Talhaiarnによる新たな歌詞を
Thomas Oliphantが訳したものだそうです。(下の歌詞で[]内の小文字がOliphantの英語訳)

Yuletide(=Christmastime)は12月24日から1月6日までのことだそうですから、
日本で言えば「年越しのお祝い」に相当する楽しい曲相当でしょうか。
(クリスチャンの方、信仰のない管理人ですみません)
カロル(キャロル)とは12～14世紀中ごろまで、踊りの為の音楽であったそうですが、
かなり古い時代から「キリスト教の礼拝で歌われる歌」を意味する様になっています。
特にクリスマスの時期限定ではないのですが、
カロルといえばクリスマス(や新年)に歌われるもの、というのが日本での受け取られ方の現状でしょう。
この曲は古いウェールズの旋律がもととなっており、その旋律はNos Galan と呼ばれていました。
Nos Galan とはウェールズ語で New Years Eve、つまり大晦日のことだそうです。
歌詞も今とはだいぶ異なっています。
尚、1794年に出版された楽譜での歌詞は以下のとおり。作詞者不明で吟遊詩人たちが奏でていたようです。

さて、日本語ではどうか、といいますと、

という松崎功さん訳の歌詞がつけられています。
ですが、私は幼稚園のときに
「もみの木まなかにたららららーらららら」
と歌っていたことをかなり鮮やかに覚えていました。
検索をかけたら、実際にそういった歌詞で歌われている事もある様子。
小さなヒイラギの枝のはずが大きなもみの木(クリスマスツリー?)になってしまい、
「あれ、あれ、あれれ？」な状況ですが、
元々のウェールズの歌詞からいろいろな変遷があったことを思えば
この時期に歌う内容でさえあれば、それはそれでアリなのかもしれません。

言葉をたてようとするあまり、
